ANN COULTER: CONSERVATIVE LOUT

I just watched the video at Hot Air. The point seemed well made to me, what's the beef?

LOOKING FOR MIDDLE GROUND IN THE IMMIGRATION DEBATE

With all due respect Rick this debate does come with a little baggage. The reason anyone who pays attention to this issue is so upset with president Bush is based on his statements and behavior, not the vapors pal.

He has shown himself resistant to securing the border so it's a little hard to trust him when he holds border security hostage to his pet "temporary guest worker" program (which again comes with some history attached, see Bracero program).

Like I say, I have supported president Bush to the hilt until he showed himself to be unserious about securing our southern and northern border.

I'm more than willing to compromise, what I'm not willing to do is usher in another IRCA, and that's exactly what I see coming down the pike.

WILL THE RIGHT SELF-DESTRUCT OVER IMMIGRATION?

Hey Rick,

Just curious, why do you think legal immigration would facilitate assimilation?

I live in a high immigration area and I tend to think there are too many factors working against assimilation in general. Multi-culturalism is of course one, but also the very high numbers of legal immigrants do as well.

I have to wonder if we're not ready for another 1924-1965 style pause in immigration.

Or perhaps to put it another way, why exactly do we require high numbers of immigrants again?

I may have missed the memo.

Hey Rick!

Next time give me a ring and I'll ferry you. I live in the city and drive downtown every day to pick up the wife from her place of work. And I have the added bonus of knowing where all the good diners are located!

I would have loved to see it, but alas, we don't have a tv. I herd you aquiited yourself quite well though.

QUICK HITS (RATHER THAN THE USUAL BLATHER)

Actually Rick,

There is a program that has been in place for several years called "Basic Pilot" that allows an employer to verify social security numbers quickly and easily.

It's important to remember how much the business community has thrown a wrench into any effort to combat illegal immigration. There have been several wildly successful programs that were working.

Vis-ICE began checking SS #'s for meatpacking plants and found several hundred bad ones. Before they could take it much farther these business owners called their reps and...

Also, the SS admin used to send what they called "no match" notices to businesses. This simply meant that there was a question about the supplied number. Guess what happened when it turned out that most the false numbers were being used by illegals?

Illegal immigration can be stopped, can be halted and we can remove the majority. Simply put the relevant agencies have never been allowed to do so.

So to state we can't get these folks out is somewhat ridiculous. Actually we can, our business leaders and politicians don't wish to and that's a whole nother can of worms.

I would just say, don't believe the hype. You don't have to have "round-ups" or "jack-boots" to do this job. Just a willingness to follow the law.

Oh, and pretend that you live in a country not an economy! (I'm not saying you, just the 'I love illegals' crowd)
